Information about Jaco Beach Costa Rica

Jaco Beach Costa RicaPersonally we have found Jaco to be a real hot spot. The horseshoe shape cove in which the beach is located has a very gradual change in water depth. You can literatlly walk very far out into the ocean before water depths become a concern for even the most catious person. The ocean water is warm year around and typically crystal clear.

Surfing in Jaco

There are plenty of shops along the main street that give surfing lessons almost everyday of the year. For a small fee and a real desire to learn this wild sport you will be actually surfing on your own by the end of the day with the help of a trainer or an experienced friend. Jaco has excellent waves for both the beginner and intermediate surfer. Rental of equipment is never a problem.

The Beach

This is where the fun begins. Main street in the town of Jaco is only a few blocks from the beach. People usually stroll in and out of the main part of town in their beach clothing allowing for a complete and very comfortable tropical setting. Sunbathing is enjoyed by many while others enjoy the shade from Palm trees boardering the sandy beach.

Restaraunts and Bars

Beatle Bar in Jaco Beach

Where would the vacationer be without good food and tropical drinks. Now we are not stating that all trips revolve around excellent cuisine but it sure helps. Fresh seafood is always available including shrimp, many types of fish, squid, clams, scalops, and more. If you have not had a cold beer with a serving of Ceviche (raw fish or shrimp in lime juice) on a hot day then you just have not truely experienced some of Costa Rica's finest bocas (snacks or h'orderves). Pictured on the right is the ever popular Beatle Bar and below the Monkey Bar.

How Much Will I Spend?

The Monkey Bar in Jaco Now there is a good question. Jaco Beach is not known for its low prices actually at all. In fact many locals don't even visit there or if they do they pack all their own food and drinks. Now what does that mean. In comparison to many other countries you might visit Jaco Costa Rica is very cheap for entertainment, lodging, and food.

Here is an example for someone on a budget.
Breakfast of beans, rice, eggs, beef chunks in a lite sauce, and coffee: $3.50 to $5.00
Lunch choice of Hamburger (not very good) beef sandwich or fried chicken, beans, rice, fruit drink: $4.25 to $6.00
Dinner of fresh fish cooked in one of many ways, salad, vegetable, rice, beans, fruit drink, soda, beer, or basic mixed drink: $6.00 to $10.00

Costa Rica Beer (Pilsen or Imperial) : $2.00 for a 12oz bottle
Fresh Tropical Fruit Drink (no alchohol): $1.00 to $2.00 (Amazing selection - try them all)
Meat on a stick ( like a shish kabob ) around $3.00 for a lot of pork and it's wonderful.

Always Use Common Sense

Jaco side streetThis is not the United States and so you don't have the protection by law enforcement that you are used to. What does this mean? A high percentage of Ticos (Costa Ricans) will always over charge a foreigner so make sure you don't feel like you are being taken advantage of. Taxi drivers are the absolute worst.

Theives - Consider everyone you see no matter the color of their skin to be a theif. If you don't, then you will learn the hard way. My first trip to Jaco was not a nice one. I lost about $600 in a video camera and music devices in the first 20 minutes. I'm not joking, they will steel from you while you are watching them do it. The police can do nothing, so be ready to defend yourself and the best defense is keep everything on you. Do not leave anything anywhere unless your intent is to give it away.

Always stay in open areas where there are other people especially at night. Do not get drunk and stagger around late at night, it will be hazerdous to your health.

Though the women are attractive, be carefull. Many of them are sharks and know every trick in the book.

A couple pictures above came from Hotel De Haan which actually has places to sleep starting at $10 per night.
